ORDER OF PROTECTION OBTAINED FOR CANCER PATIENT
CCLA worked with its partners in the Immigrant Survivors Project (“ISP”) and obtained an order of protection for a woman who had been diagnosed with cancer. Client had been the victim of repeated abuse. The abuse included excessive texts and phone calls, forcible entry into her house and the use of the abuser’s visitation periods with her child as an opportunity to harass the client.
CCLA’s staff attorney represented client at an evidentiary hearing and obtained an order of protection against her abuser forbidding contact with limited exceptions relating to child visitation and emergencies. The client was referred to CCINS to secure immigration relief through the U-visa.
Asylum Obtained for Victims of Religious Persecution
A couple fled India and came to the United States on visas after suffering religious persecution and abuse. The couple’s children had been beaten and their daughter was hospitalized after an attempted assault. The family’s property also was damaged by their abusers. Their initial application was denied and they came to CCLA seeking representation. CCLA placed the couple with a pro bono attorney from its network, who handled their asylum claim before the immigration court. With the attorney's assistance, the couple was granted asylum.
