The SMOC Spring Break Festival

Lawrence Baker On Thursday, March 31, around 50 kids who were accompanying their parents and relatives to St. Mary of Celle Family Strengthening Center's (SMOC) programs during Spring Break received a big surprise: The SMOC Spring Break Festival.

The English as Second Language (ESL) volunteer teacher, Ray, stood up in front of the children in one of the site's classrooms to say: "Hello kids, our Intermediate ESL class will perform a play for you!"

Kids' parents, grandparents and relatives started getting in position to act out Funny, Funny, Easter Bunny, a tale about an Easter bunny who lost candy inside some eggs.

The humorous story made the kids and spectators laugh and made them enthusiastic about seeing the second act, performed by the Basic ESL class and directed by the volunteer teacher, Crysta. Then the class sang Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles, a perfect song to forget the cold weather. The mood could not have been better. The audience was moving with the rhythm and singing together with the chorus.

Next it was the Advance ESL class's turn. Anne, the volunteer teacher, did a great job directing a musical number that ended with the moms giving the children candy, which made them happy.

The SMOC Spring Break Festival was just a teaser for Easter and a great opportunity to get families together and at the same time show what the clients have learned during the ESL classes.
