Responsibilities of Interns: Intern will assist with coordination of youth mentorship program in the New City/Back of the Yards community (Chicago). Under the supervision of the Program Manager, intern will facilitate/co-facilitate psychoeducational groups, plan recreational activities and provide case management services to youth in the program, as needed. Intern will also gain program management experience by assisting with the general coordination of the program, which includes recruiting both youth participants and volunteer mentors, assisting with screening and training process, developing marketing and outreach materials, establishing community partnerships to benefit participants, and participating in fundraising/development activities, as needed.

Special skills required/desired: Intern must be able to build rapport with youth ages 14-17 and feel comfortable leading/facilitating psychoeducational groups and activities.

Interns(s) in this position will learn about: Youth development, facilitation/training skills, case management, program management, community outreach, program marketing, volunteer management.

Learning Objectives:

1. Training/Facilitation Skills: Intern will learn how to develop lesson plans and facilitate group sessions for youth ages 14 -17 that focus on topics like communication skills, healthy relationships and life skills. Intern will also help develop materials for new mentor training, and may assist with training facilitation for adult volunteers.
2. Program Development/Management: Intern will learn about the administrative tasks associated with youth programing, including fundraising, reporting, community outreach, and other related skills.
3. Volunteer Management/Recruitment: Intern will assist with creating a marketing plan and outreach to potential volunteer mentors. Intern will learning about our screening process, and policies designed to ensure youth safety. Intern will also work with volunteers to provide guidance and support through a monthly newsletter.

Trained/Mentored: Interns will be trained and supervised by the CYFS Special Projects Manager (MSW). Intern will participate in weekly planning meetings with the Special Projects Manager and Program Coordinator to help determine program activities, recruitment strategies, and community outreach initiatives. Intern will shadow Program Coordinator who facilitates group mentoring sessions at schools and other community-based locations. Once the intern is comfortable with the format and group, intern will co-facilitate or, in some cases, develop lesson plans and lead group sessions. Intern will work closely with program staff to discuss observations of youth during group sessions, and provide referrals to other services, as needed.

Paid/Unpaid: Unpaid

Hours available to work: Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Work Location: 721 N. LaSalle, Chicago, IL. 60654 and community based locations in the New City Neighborhood.

Requirements: Preference will be given to students in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program with a focus on social work, psychology, counseling or related field. Interns must pass a criminal background check and attend Mandated Reporter and Protecting God’s Children Trainings. Intern should be able to move freely to meet the demands of working with youth (participation in physical activities, some bending, and light lifting). Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are strongly encouraged to apply.
